Post Veil History: Katniss came through the Veil about four years ago. She was found quickly by Christos La Krail and came back to the knights. Spent some time under his tutelage before she was shipped off to deal with her traumatic pre-veil memories that haunted her.

Chosen Canon Point: Pre-Mockingjay

Personality and Psychology:

Katniss is, first and foremost, a survivor. Her life growing up has never been particularly easy, which is common for a child in her canon. The people of the 12 districts of Panem are severely oppressed, with the 12th district being one of the worst. Some of the people there, like the Bakers for example, do a little bit better than the families of the coal miners, but all are hungry all the time, and have little to no freedom.

Katniss’ father was killed in a coal mining accident when she was 11 years old, and that was the moment when she could no longer even think of being a child. Her mother fell into an intense depression, leaving Katniss to take care of her little sister, Prim, and somehow keep their family from starving.

Since then, Katniss has always been the physical head of the family, journeying through the gates into the woods surrounding her district and hunting/gathering for food to eat and trade. She is incredibly responsible for her age, because to not do so would mean death to herself and her family. She has little choice, but she is remarkably good a her job considering it was a responsibility thrust upon her at an incredibly young age.

Katniss loves her sister, Primrose, more than anything else in the entire world. Her life revolves around the girl, from taking out tesserae to get supplies necessary to life (and also putting more slips with her name in the reaping bowl), to teaching her how to milk her goat to make cheese to trade, to literally raising her. She also volunteers to take her sister’s place in The Hunger Games when she was called at the Reaping, which essentially amounts to giving up her life for her sister’s.

Gale is also an incredibly important person to Katniss, and is essentially her best friend and closest confidant. They hunt together, and taught each other the skills they knew to mutually benefit their families and keep them as healthy as possible. She does harbor some romantic feelings for him as well, though due to the fact that Katniss is against marriage and family, due to the fact that she never wants to bring a child into the world she lives in, she never thinks, acts, nor really realizes these feelings originally.

Peeta becomes remarkably important to her as well. He is the male tribute from her district, and they won the 74th annual Hunger Games together, the first pair to ever do so. Their relationship is complicated, and originally one sided, but fate seems to continually bring them together. They would die for one another, and both attempt to make this ultimate sacrifice on more the one occasion. She loves him, though it takes her an extended period of time to realize it, and once she truly starts to accept it, he’s taken from her.

Katniss is a rather broken young woman. She suffers from PTSD, which is not shocking considering the vast amount of terror and violence she has experienced since volunterring for the Games, and is still a teenager. The things she has witnessed would break someone with a more fragile mind than hers, and it is an incredible feat that she’s functional at all. She feels an incredible amount of guilt for the people she's had to kill and for not being able to save Rue, who she thinks about often, and the others that gave their lives for her and Peeta in the third Quarter Quell. She hasn't even begun to process the loss of District 13, having only just learned about the bombings.

In her mind, the Revolution would never have begun if it hadn’t been for her and Peeta’s suicide stunt at the end of her first Hunger Games. While she knows that the true blame for everything was the Capitol itself, and the now dead President Snow, she can’t help but feel heavy guilt as well because of her direct actions.

Though she doesn’t believe it herself, Katniss is very charismatic, so long as she’s not actively trying to be so. She’s a natural leader, able to speak in way that makes people want to follow her, and her straight-forward attitude makes it hard not to like her. She has an effect on people that she doesn’t understand, drawing them in with her intensity and her kindness. She has a great deal of compassion, but can also be merciless against those that deserve it, and while she may not want to, she will always do what must be done in order to survive.


Memories Retained or Lost:

Katniss lost pretty much all of her memories directly, though she had nightmares about the Hunger Games and her closest friends haunting her. She since made sense of most of that mess and learned how to deal with their presence without too much detriment, though it's been a journey.

Powers and Abilities:

Katniss does not have any superhuman or supernatural abilities, though she is skilled in a few areas. She’s an incredible shot with a bow and arrow, as well as an impressive hunter/gatherer and survivalist. She’s also extremely athletic, able to swiftly climb trees, sprint quickly or run over long distances, and other physical feats. Her abilities tend toward more dexterous things rather than brute strength.
